How It Works

The QRE1113 uses an infrared LED to emit light toward a nearby surface. A phototransistor detects the amount of infrared light reflected back from that surface.

Light-coloured surfaces generally reflect more infrared light, while dark surfaces absorb more.

A connected microcontroller can interpret these changes to distinguish between different surfaces, making the sensor particularly useful for line-following robots.
